PRN files are created by creating a new printer icon in the printers folder that uses print to file instead of the normal printer port. For example; a Dell 1110 printer is at your home and you are on the road. On your road computer add a printer and select the driver for your Dell 1110 printer, and Print to file when you create the icon like – Dell 1110 (to File) for the label. Select print and then the (to File) printer and put it somewhere on the hard drive that you can find it, like C: emp or Desktop for example. With a name that will tell you what is in the file. Open your email and send home the file as an attachment. Someone at home can Save Attachments to a place where they can find them on the computer. Now you (or someone at that location) can use our Prn File Sender program to send them to the printer. Will send any file.
You used to be able to print these files to your local printer by using the command COPY /B C:\FILENAME.PRN LPT1:. These days, printers are not attached to LPT1 anymore. USB cables are used instead. So you have to use the network method in order to print the file. Here’s how to do this in Windows.
A friend sent me an email with an interesting problem. He had a report he needed to share with another team member, but they didn’t have the program that he used to create the report. There also wasn’t a common file format they used. I suggested he try sending a .PRN file or printer text file. This solution also works if you ever lose your printer at work and need to send files elsewhere to print.
Never heard of a PRN file? Don’t worry as most people haven’t. You’ve probably seen references to these files before, but overlooked them. In many programs, the print dialog has a checkbox for Print to file. Rather than sending the file to your printer, the output is formatted for a specific printer. The result is a file with a .PRN extension that the recipient prints without having to have the application that created the file. For example, you could print a brochure produced in Microsoft Publisher without having that software package.
A PRN file is a file created using the checkbox that appears within some Print dialog boxes on Windows. It contains a set of device-specific instructions that a printer, fax machine, or other device uses to print a document. PRN files may contain text or binary content, depending on the device the file was created for.
Despite what the name of the checkbox may lead you to believe, PRN files do not simply contain a copy of the document you want to print. Instead, they contain page layout information and other instructions that one specific type of device can use to transfer your document to a printed page. If you want to create a usable copy of your document using the Print dialog box, do not select the checkbox. Instead, use the option to create a .PDF copy of your file.
If you do end up creating a PRN file, you can print it using the printer or other device you selected as you created the file. For example, if you use the same type of printer at home as you do at work, you might want to create a PRN file at home, bring it to your workplace, and print your document from your work printer. Large print shops sometimes use PRN files to print their customers’ files, without needing to have access to the proprietary software that created the file.
To send a PRN file to a printer in Windows, you can enter the command copy/b yourfilename.prn \\yourcomputername\yourprintername at the Windows Command Prompt (assuming you use a network- or USB-connected printer). Remember, however, that the PRN file will print correctly only if it was created by a printer that is compatible with your own.
On Macs, you can use a PRN file to open and print a copy of your document with Apple Preview. If you are having trouble opening a PRN file in Preview, you might be able to open it by changing its extension to .PS.
If necessary, you can view a PRN file’s contents using any text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad, Apple TextEdit, or GitHub Atom. However, because PRN files are created in a variety of formats for use with a variety of devices, there is no guarantee that your PRN file will contain any usable information. Also, you should not edit your PRN file, as doing so might make the file unprintable.

This utility consists mainly of two .PRN files, one of which you print about 3 copies, then turn the pages over so that the printed sides get re-fused and clean off the fuser rollers as they exit (they also use a LOT of toner, so that the HP guys make a lot of money!)
A PRN file is simply a printer file that is created for a specific printer in a language that the printer understands. Therefor PRN files are printer model specific and will not work with other types of printers. The format is written filename.prn, and the files may contain some readable parts, usually printer commands, along with some binary character non-readable parts, usually the image/text data. A special program is required to read a PRN file.
PRN files are very useful if you have problems with your printer and are requesting technical support. In fact a support phone technician will almost always ask for one of these files if a printer problem you report isn’t readily solvable. The PRN will tell the technician things like your label and page size, margins you may have set, as well as all other printer driver settings. The image you are printing is also contained in this file so the recipient of the file will be able to send it to a like model printer and see what you are printing.
Another use of a PRN for the NeuraLabel 300x printer is to capture ink usage required for a given label. NeuraLabel offers a free InkEstimator application which will read the PRN and calculate ink usage and costs. This program will also provide driver setting options that might suggest alternative settings that can save ink and lower costs. Finally with just the one PRN file, InkEstimator can calculate the number of printed labels possible with a single set of ink.
How does one go about creating a PRN file for a given label? There are two ways. First, many applications have a “print to file” capability already built in the program. Adobe Acrobat Reader is one example. To create a PRN using an application such as Acrobat, first select the target printer for the PRN and set up all the driver parameters, exactly as if you were sending the file to the printer. Every setting in the printer driver will be captured in the PRN. Note that PRNs can be a single page, copies of a single page, or multiple pages. If you are making a file for technical support, you will usually supply a single page PRN file, depending on the support issue. If you are making a PRN for InkEstimator, you should keep copies set to 1. In either case, smaller files with fewer pages are easier to work with and diagnose.
Once the driver parameters are set, look for a “print to file” capability in the application you are using. Adobe Acrobat Reader offers a checkbox under its Advanced button. Note that this is different than the Advanced button in the NeuraLabel 300x printer driver. While this box is checked, any time you click the Print button, a dialog will appear allowing you to name the PRN file and browse for a location to save it. For Reader this setting “sticks” until you uncheck the box. Be sure to remember where you save the file, and you should be good to go.
