Developer’s Description
CBBT Contract Bridge Bidding Tutor This Bridge Tutor provides training for the auction phase following the ‘5-card majors’ modern standard. The user receives a random hand and bid according to the standard bidding rules; if the bidding is incorrect it is automatically corrected and a message explains why the user should have selected this alternative bid. The bidding of the other hands is automatically generated. The bidding rules implemented are slightly more aggressive than the Standard American Yellow Card (SAYC) as they closely match the Lebel conventions. This training tool assumes minimal knowledge of Bridge fundamentals: cards and denominations ranks, computing honor points (HCP), Total Points (TP) or support (S) points, commitments of a contract, etc.This tutor is intended for beginners or intermediary players and therefore focuses on constructive bidding. Through this trial and error process it enables the acquisition of good practices to reach ‘game’ or a good contract. It does not include competitive bidding, identification of slams or sophisticated bidding rules intended for experienced players (but does include basic conventions such as Stayman or Texas). Features
Structure:
- Limited Bids: There are only 38 possible calls a player can make during bidding. This includes 35 level bids (1 to 7), bids for a specific suit (Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs), No Trump (NT), Double (to penalize opponents), and Redouble (to further penalize a Double).
- Sequential Bidding: Bidding proceeds clockwise around the table, with each player having the opportunity to bid, pass (decline to bid), or double.
- Three Pass Rule: The bidding ends after three consecutive passes. The highest unpassed bid becomes the contract.
Information Exchange:
- Strength: Bids convey information about the overall strength of a hand. Higher level bids indicate stronger hands.
- Suit Length: Bids also communicate the length (number of cards) held in a particular suit. Bidding a suit shows a preference for that suit to be the trump suit (the suit that outranks all other suits).
- Opening Bids: Opening bids establish a certain range of hand strength and suit length.
- Overcalls: Bidding over the opponent’s opening indicates a strong hand and potentially a good fit with partner’s holding.

- Conventions: Bidding systems go beyond the basic meanings of bids and incorporate specific agreements between partners about what certain bids signify. These conventions can involve specific hand strengths, suit lengths, or specific two-card holdings.
- Competition: Bidding can be used to compete with opponents, driving up the final contract level and potentially making it more difficult for them to make.
