The first thing you notice when you take it out is how hefty and solidly built it is, or rather the aluminum shell is. On the front we see a small cutout which acts as a window to the acrylic reservoir inside and helps see the coolant level in the reservoir. On the back are 5 holes, 4 of which are used to mount the Ion and the 5th in the middle is where the LED goes into. On the right side relative to the front is another extender which has a low profile stop plug pre-installed. On the top is an M20 fill port and a fill cap that is in line with the top panel. All the fittings that come with the Ion have a black chrome finish, although other colors are also available from XSPC and others. There is no RPM readout or control here, and the pump is intended to be operated at a continuous 12 V. The panel leading to the window has a chamfered, polished surface and the window itself shows the two sections of the reservoir- above the top and the pump top part itself- which are joined at a slight angle. Once you add the LED, it gets a lot easier to spot the coolant level through the window whether it is in the dark or in a lit environment. You can also get aftermarket LEDs in colors of your preference that can also be powered by motherboard fan headers, and also from dedicated lighting controllers if that is your preference. This would be useful if you are using threaded funnels or tubing to aid in filling the loop, but the M20 threaded port when open is plenty to use with standard funnels or fill bottles. On to installation now, here is 1 of 4 possible orientations to install the provided mounts on to the the Ion:. If you would rather just install the Ion by itself, just screw the thumbscrews through your case panel and into the back. If they are not long enough, get appropriate length UNC screws. Mounting is very flexible here, and this is a positive given that small profile custom loops can often have little flexibility in such things. A big positive here, for the Ion. First up, the 8 countersunk screws that hold the top and bottom panels in place:. As I mentioned before, this thing is not going to break apart anytime soon. The acrylic reservoir is shaped so that the 8 screws on the top and bottom do not pierce it in any way. Similar to the bay res version, 4 tiny screws hold the pump in place on the reservoir itself. The pump has already been discussed previously but suffice to say the impeller is a simple design but robust by itself. The pump top is similar to that in the bay res except with the inlet on the bottom, and there being a directing panel over it. It was a lot easier to fill a loop and bleed air from this setup than the bay reservoir with the side mounted inlet port and the lesser height on top for air to escape so this is definitely more user friendly as well. But going out of your way to mention issues with a radiator on a review of a different product is something else entirely. Is it bad to dry run this kind of motor? I will ask and find out more if possible. Out of sheer curiosity… Would running two gpu blocks, a cpu block, and dual mm radiators be too much for this pump? It seems to have almost perfect dimensions for something like a Dimastech EasyXL. Very likely going to be too much for the single pump version. Good question. I emailed XSPC to get an official answer and they said it will be fine as long as the reservoir is full. This will ensure the pump is always being fed the coolant and not running dry. Is there any way to mod the steel chamber in the ion to accommodate a D5? The actual part in contact with coolant is acrylic and the top is acrylic as well. You would have to make a custom top for the D5 which is a lot bigger and at this point you may as well just get a reservoir with an integrated D5 top. I also would not recommend using Amazon reviews as data points. If it helps, the owner of Performance PCs told me he has had minimal RMA issues with the X2O in all the various forms, and I have 4 of those pumps here that get used a few times with no issues yet. I guess I should have phrased it as coulf you fit, say a Bitspower 80mm acrylic top in this thing and replace the pump? They say the pump is loud, tends to leak, or flat out dies. I would suggest using the spare port on the Ion on the right side and emptying the loop above it CPU block and tubing and then turning the case around to get the water from the Ion and some of the radiator out. The X2O is on the louder side for me personally, but if noise is not a concern then go for it. Another option, assuming you already have a reservoir, is to just add a more powerful, single pump such as the Swiftech MCP50X. Depends a lot on the specific radiators used, but I would suggest going with a stronger pump regardless, given the triple block, dual rad loop you have.
